- Appearance: The first thing anyone notices about Lily is her naturally vibrant red hair. It is long, thick, and sleek and glimmers like fire in the sunlight. Her skin is of pale complexion, almost porcelain like. Her eyes are a brilliant shade of green, easily recognizable and almond shaped, a trait she shares with her father.
She is taller than the average girl, standing at 5’9” barefoot. She has a rather lithe and petite frame. Legs for days.
Lily is a natural beauty, wearing and needing very little makeup. She has a sweet face, kind eyes, and a warm smile. It is no wonder why she has managed to catch the eye of several boys in the school.
Being a muggle born girl Lily wears very muggle clothing when she is not in her school robes. In terms of style she has a wide selection of cute and modest dresses, pants, sweaters, and shirts. - Notable Markings: None.
Personality
- Strengths:
Love: One of her strongest and most powerful of traits is her ability to love. Lily loves fiercely and strongly and puts those she loves before herself often, without a second thought. It is because of this she's able to find the beauty in others, especially when they can not see it in themselves.
Potions: Magical cooking? Lily had always loved baking and cooking with her mother. This translated over well to potions making and she found herself with an almost natural affinity for the art of potion craft.
Charms: From the moment she got her wand, which was said to be good for charms, she easily became adept at the casting of charms. She often goes home with singing teapots, according to her sister. She can cast a corporeal Patronus in the form of a Doe.
Duelling: While not the best in the class, her many, many, years of friendship with Severus led to a deft hand in combat. She does not enjoy fighting, but when forced to only few can best her.
Transfiguration: From her instant connection with professor McGonagall, Lily’s third strongest magic is that of transfiguration. She was well practiced at turning rats into tea cups. She gifted Professor Slughorn with a fish bowl that held a single Lily petal floating. Once the petal drifted to the bottom, it became a fish.
Control of Magic/Semi wandless magic: At a young age she showed magical promise and from her practice with Severus she gained a very strong control of magic at a young age, which is rare. While she requires her wand for complicated spells, she can achieve some small bits of magic without one. - Weaknesses:
Trusting: Lily has always been quick to trust those around her. She believes in second chances and people redeeming themselves. It has bitten her hand several times and is still something she cannot seem to change.
Hot Tempered: An inherited trait she is not proud of. While she is not overly quick to anger she does have a temper which has got the best of her and her logic at the least convenient of times.
Slightly Stubborn: Lily carries unshakable morals that she sits very strong behind. When she has made a decision and finalized it she does not often go back on it. It is something that causes her much internal turmoil, especially when it comes to certain boys.
Caring: Lily cannot help it, she cares. She cares about people and what they think. She cares about human life. She has a very loving and caring heart and while some might think this more of a strength, for Lily it has become one of the things causing her pain. - Likes:
Cooking: She loves to create things you can eat, it is very satisfying.
Reading: Both fiction and nonfiction, words carry a lot of meaning for her.
Chocolate: Who doesn’t?
Studying and making notes: It might seem weird, but Lily loves to sit and make notes and study. It is something her and Severus did together for years. Remus has since taken the spot. It is not the same.
Flowers: They are pretty. She enjoys the meaning behind each one.
Swimming: Cool water on a warm day, who could ask for more? - Dislikes:
Bullies: Picking on someone else? Low.
Pureblood Supremacist attitude: Your blood does not make you great, your actions do!
Flying: She is not very good at flying, it makes her nervous.
Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans: She got a flavour that caused her to vomit and refuses to touch them again. - Personality: Lily Evans is a loving and caring girl who is bright, intelligent, and kind. She stands up for the little guy, no matter the circumstance. She is vibrant and enjoys playing and games, when they are appropriate and everyone involved is having fun. She also very much enjoys caring for the people around her and often goes above and beyond the norm to help whenever she can, often at her own expense.
Lily believes there is good in every person, it simply needs to be nurtured. She tries her very hardest to be honest and reliable to her friends, and does not often fail to deliver. Her love filled heart is strong and courageous. No one and nothing will shake her morals and what she stands for her.
She has a strong appreciation for all things living, to the point where she does not enjoy most forms of meat as it comes from animals. She does not see much difference between her own pet cat and the pig that died for breakfast. This is not something she is vocal about, as it is hard enough to get full meals in a school full of carnivores.
Lily has a very forgiving nature, believing that people make mistakes and can be redeemed, but they have to want redemption first. For those, who are willing to work to right their wrongs and take responsibility for their actions, she is the first to rush in to support them to the best of her ability.
She has a hard time dealing with bullies, as she finds cruelty abhorrent. Many of the boys in her house have been on the receiving end of an Evans lecture or two about their immature and nasty behaviour, Sirius Black and James Potter being the two largest culprits.
While she is naturally a trusting and forgiving person, Lily does not handle hurt very well. Stemming from the insecurities created by having a sister constantly calling her a freak and not wanting anything to do with her she has a hard time when she is not accepted, especially by those she is close to. Nothing will shatter her faster than a betrayal of her trust, as Severus Snape discovered at the beginning of fifth year.
History
- History:
Lily Jane Evans was born January 30th, 1960, to Robert and Jane Evans. She was the second daughter of the muggle parents who lived on the only nice street in Cokeworth, England. Their eldest daughter, Petunia, did not want to become a sister. Robert worked as the foreman in the nearby plant, affording him slightly more luxuries than some of their neighbours. She grew up to be a very sweet and kind little girl, though the sisters did not get on well, Petunia being ever jealous of her younger sister. It caused many of the insecurities she carries with her.
After school, her and her sister would go play at the park near their home until their mother came home from work. It was, here at the age of seven, that Lily discovered she had these incredible powers and could make petals on flowers dance. She stood there, astounded, almost disbelieving herself. If she could do that, what else could she do?
Her sister called out to her, challenging her to a swing jump. She hated jumping off of the swings, it always hurt her legs as she could never make the grass. Petunia always won. This did not stop Lily from accepting, because it meant she was doing something with her sister.
They were swinging, up, up, up. Petunia jumped first, like always, and gracefully landed in the grass. She was five years older, which meant she was bigger, taller. She had to make the grass this time! Not even to win, just so it did not hurt.
She jumped, but it was still not long enough, she was going to land on the dirt, right by the old root. She put her hands out and she was suddenly falling slowly, landing softly in a spot that had many times before meant very sore feet for hours. “Whoa, did you see that Tuney?” She said with amazement sparkling in her eyes.
“I knew it! You are nothing but a freak!” Her sister shouted at her and ran away.
She stood there completely stunned and crushed, tears bursting to her eyes before she could stop them. She gave her older sister a look of hurt, shattered that something she did made Petunia hate her more. Her downward spiral was broken by an unfamiliar voice.
“You’re not a freak.” Said the boy as he stepped out of the shadows from where he had been watching. He gave her the most lopsided smile she had ever seen and she could not help but feel a sense of comfort from him. She returned his smile.
He grew a flower in his hand and she felt her own heart skip wildly in excitement. “You’re special. She’s jealous.” He said as he held out the flower for her in slender shaking fingers. She smiled again, it was returned.
“I’m Lily.”
“I’m Severus.”
Lily’s life changed forever that day.
Every day she could not wait to go to the park to meet with her friend Severus. He taught her everything he knew about magic and the two practiced and played any chance they got. For years they were best friends, waiting for the day they would finally get to go to Hogwarts.
Petunia and Severus did not get along and would clash often, though the Evans family were fond of the boy.
Her parents were thrilled to discover they had a witch for a daughter and encouraged her.
When she received her letter she danced around, her parents had even thrown her a magic themed party, of course they got everything wrong, being muggles.
Jealous of her sister, Petunia wrote to the Headmaster, Dumbledore, and requested that she too be allowed to attend the school with her sister. Dumbledore politely refused. Lily would later discover that it would bring even more jealousy and hatred from her sister.
Both her parents and her sister met her off at platform 9 ¾ where she found Severus waiting for her. Saying goodbye to her family she boarded the train with her best friend and the two found an empty compartment. They loaded in and began to talk, Severus sharing some of his books with her, when the compartment opened and two boys slid their way in.
Severus looked to her, wanting to protest. She shrugged, seeing no harm in meeting more wizards and maybe making friends.
It was a tense moment as she could tell the other boys were making Severus uncomfortable. To try and break the ice she asked the room a question.
“So, what house does everyone think they will be in?”
The question did not seem to help. The boys began to fight, the two others throwing insults at Severus and when he stood to eject them, the two boys tossed him out into the hall.
Lily stood and looked horrified for the first time in her life. She could not believe how rude and cruel these two boys were being to her friend. Severus had been the one to accept her and show her she was special and not a freak. She rushed out to help him up and told him to find another compartment on the train, that she would follow along.
She did so, but not before turning and giving the boys in the car a piece of her mind.
“You are both nothing but a couple of arrogant bullies!” She said before turning and leaving to follow her friend, not caring if they wanted to reply.
The rest of the train ride Severus was very quiet, distant.
She was called before Severus during the Sorting Hat Ceremony. She sat on the stool, nervous, feeling her palms sweat. The hat thought for a long moment, almost stalling, as it spoke to the girl in her mind. It had considered her for Ravenclaw, thinking she would do well in a house of intellects. In the end it was her bravery that won and the hat yelled "Gryffindor!" She excitedly took a seat at the table that roared in applause. Her friend, however, was sorted in Slytherin, the rival house. She also found herself sorted into the same house as the boys from the train, discovering their names were James Potter and Sirius Black.
Being in a separate house from her friend was not what she had expected, always thinking they would be together at Hogwarts, like they had been before. She made new friends, that was not difficult, and also found herself with a constant thorn in her side. Any time he could James Potter was trying to show off in front of her.
For the most part she simply ignored him, not wanting to give him the satisfaction of knowing she was paying any attention. Or that she actually found some of the magical tricks quite clever. The only time she could not keep her mouth shut was any time he and his friends were picking on other students and being a couple of bullies. James Potter quickly earned the nickname "toerag".
When it came to her studies, Lily dove in head first. She was naturally bright and gifted with magic and was top of the class in most of her subjects with much hard work and determination. She had a very special affinity for potions, which quickly won her the favour of the Potions Master. She fell into a routine at school, growing magically, spending as much time as she could with Severus, practicing magic together, making new spells up, little secrets they had.
She began to worry for Severus as time went by, feeling him grow colder and more distant. She felt it was the influence of her classmates, his fellow Slytherins, especially the ones from known purist families.
Hogwarts was not always perfect. For a muggleborn girl there was one more challenge to face, one she was not prepared for. There was a stigma for witches born to muggles, those with no magic, and slur word just for them. Mudblood.
Severus’ housemates were never subtle with their use of the word and their distaste for her, simply because of her lineage. It was so medieval a way to think the 1970’s it disgusted her. In the summer of 1975, Lily had expressed her concern to Severus about his choice of company within his house. Surely their were students within his own house he could befriend. Severus retaliated by throwing her growing friendship with Remus Lupin back at her. Remus was a Marauder, but far from the bully his mates were.
It was their first fight, but sadly not their last that year. She spent the rest of the summer at a friends cabin, where she grew even closer to her housemate and friend Andromeda Black. Both girls knew what it was like to have difficult families.
Having moved passed the fight in the summer Lily began her fifth year with hopeful and excited eyes. She had been chosen as a Prefect and had even stronger bonds with her friends. Hogwarts was beginning to feel like her true home and the wizarding world her world.
It had only been a few weeks into September when all of that changed. Coming down to the lake to study with Severus she found him being bullied by none other than Sirius and James. They had him hung upside down, robes over his face, shaking out his pockets. Her blood boiled hot and her cheeks flushed red as she rushed forward and stepped in front of Severus. After countering their spell she began in on them with a scolding. She stopped dead when Severus hissed words she never expected at her.
“I don’t need you to defend me, you filthy mudblood!”
She gave him the same look she had given her sister that day on the swings. That same soul shattered, torn into pieces look that would make anyone regret their choice of words.
James and Sirius began to grow even more heated at the use of the word "mudblood", shouting for Severus to apologize to her.
It was too late, however, as Lily had begun to flee from the entirety of the scene, leaving Severus to endure a few more beatings from James and Sirius before Professor McGonagall appeared to end the incident with a decent helping of detentions to her Gryffindor boys.
Since that day Lily has refused to speak with Severus, James, or Sirius. Instead she has found herself growing even closer to others around her, especially Andromeda.
Person behind the Character
- Chat Box/OOC Name: Smare
- How did you find us: I made this place.
- Any Previous Character: Tom Riddle
- Role Playing Sample: It was November. The pumpkins in the great hall had been removed. Nothing would be decorated again until December first. She knew because she had volunteered to be on the decorating committee that year. It was November and yet the sting was still fresh, as if it had been a day ago, not almost two months now.
Perhaps it was less and that was why it still hurt, time did not seem to make sense these last few months. October had been her worst month ever. She had been late four times. She almost forgot her book for a class another time. Her mind was scattered and distant. Lily Evans knew the only thing holding her together were her other friendships. It was Andromeda, Remus, and the others, that were keeping her from unraveling at the seams. Though, and she would never admit it, she had become afraid of them all.
At least, all of them that were not also muggleborn. Purebloods and Halfbloods had no idea what it was really like. Andromeda and Remus could just as easily turn on her as Severus had done.
Any of them could hurt and betray her the way he had. Any of them could take her fears and make them real. And yet she refused to close off completely. The hat had placed her in Gryffindor. She was meant to be brave, that meant facing your fears head on.
Any of her friends could hurt her, but they could just as easily make her life better. So far it was the latter, and it was that she would focus on, though she could not say that she was as open as she had been before that summer. Those close to her had noticed the difference, that she had changed. She developed a much needed layer of armour that she needed to be careful did not do more harm then good to the people around her.
Lily was pulled up from the page of the book she had been blankly staring at when someone entered the shared dorm. She closed the book, realizing no more reading was going to happen today, and instead focused her attention on the group of girls that entered. “Hey Lils, we are going to see if Professor Aelius will let us into the music room to jam. You wanna join?”
It had been a long time since her fingers had hit the ivories. It would be nice to play with her friends. “That would be a lovely distraction from failed attempts at homework.” She stood, dropping the book on her bed. Her dark and sad thoughts faded as Andromeda put her arm in Lily’s and the group of her housemates all but dragged her out of the room.
It was difficult to close off with friends like them.
